The Parting Glass

If angels should pass upon this road
After I’ve long departed.
If you should hear them in the night
In the rustling of the leaves.
If you should speak with one of them,
Its voice, a half-remembered sound.
If they should ask,
What did his days on Earth achieve.
Then raise a glass with the angels
And speak only of the good times.
If after I have gone
You should ever think of me.

I’m in between the devil and drowning
Is what I mean.
Between the cock of the trigger
And the bullet spiralling onward
In murderous flight.
Waiting, silently hating
This terminal entropy.
I’d scream out my frustration
But who would hear
When the whole world is busy
Screaming at me.
Waving pistols, swords in the air,
Revving their internal combustion engines
In unison, this angelic chorus
Speeding on to damnation
Foot pressed hard to the floor.

The Parting Glass

Day 28 of the Review 30

Made of sticks and stones

If angels should pass upon this road
After I’ve long departed.
If you should hear them in the night
In the rustling of the leaves.
If you should speak with one of them,
Its voice, a half-remembered sound.
If they should ask,
What did his days on Earth achieve.
Then raise a glass with the angels
And speak only of the good times.
If after I have gone
You should ever think of me.

Earthbound

I plummeted down from on high,

Descending earthward at the speed of sound.

My life flashing before my eyes,

Replayed for the cheering crowd,

Screaming for blood and my destruction.

But you, who had suffered most

From every cruel word, all those indiscretions.

But you were there in spite of it all.

You were there to break my fall.

Believe

You might laugh if I said

That I believe in angels.

But what is important

Is that the angels

Believe in me.

Angel friend

You stopped by to ask

If I was alright today.

My angel, dear friend.
