Do Not Resuscitate

We wouldn’t make the effort to keep it alive.
Stood hands in our pockets and watched it die.
Watched the embers until they were ashes, cold in the fire.

Where once we were junkies for the drug of desire
Now we take doses of pain and fear and lie after lie.
When we needed kisses of life as medicine

We turned our backs, hands in our pockets and let it die.
We bedded down with liars, we let our hearts stop.
For all this bleeding – our hearts never started beating again.

I Was Different Then

I used to love her
But that was then,
That was a different life,
A different circumstance.

That was when someone else
Held the strings
And I danced on
To someone else’s song.

My fate was controlled
My future was not my own,
A dice throw and happenstance
Outside of my control.

But now I take my chance
Out here on my own
Where freedom isn’t a delusion,
Not a bargaining chip

Illusion, bought and sold.
I used to love her
But that was yesterday
And yesterday is gone.

Drifting

I didn’t see, I never heard
The silences lengthen.
I never noticed that you had drifted
From out of my embrace.

I never missed your gentle caress.
I never stopped to consider,
I never stopped to just care.

When did we stop dreaming together,
When did I start building walls.
I didn’t see, I never heard
Until I heard the slamming door.

Mercy Child

Mercy, child why are you crying?
All the tears in the ocean
Won’t bring Daddy back home again.

Child why are you dreaming,
You’ve got to pack away the toys and games
No tantrums, not on moving day.
We’ve got to go
We can’t afford to live here, the end,
Nothing more to say.

Child, why are dying?
Nothing lasts forever;
Happiness is the greatest lie
And the first casualty to die.
Because fish go swimming in different seas.
No! You can’t see Daddy today.
