The Silence Between

In the silence between
Your lips and mine
Lies the truth unsaid. Unseen,
The key to this epic design.

In the darkness between
Two hearts shattered and lost
Lies the remedy undreamed
To turn hearts star crossed.

In the memories between
The dark and the day
Lie the tears, cried in silence, unseen
And that flickering hope you’d stay.

I’m glad my pain amuses you,
I’m glad my distress keeps you warm.
I’m glad my feelings of inadequacy
Kept you entertained on the night of the storm.

I’m secretly pleased that you enjoyed my disease
That you found them of use, the experiments on my body and soul.
That you could view with scholarly detachment
The dissection of my brain by the scavenger crows.

I’m glad all my notions and twisted emotions
Merited a footnote in the book of your life.
I’m happy for you, that you found someone new.
But the scars that I bear were caused by you and your knife.

Fooling Around

I reached out but you weren’t there.
I know I spent so long pushing you away
Pretending that I didn’t care.
Yet somehow I thought you’d stay,
I chose to believe in forever.
Yes I know, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I was a fool thinking you’d never leave
Thinking the ties holding you here would never break.
I kidded myself you were easy to deceive
With all my sneaking around. Finding out how much punishment you’d take.
But all the time it was you fooling me.
Still, I’ve learned, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Lingering glances
Towards the door
Through which
You are aching to leave.

I want you to stay
But I’ve seen the signs.
Never again
Will you be aching for me.

Destination Unknown

For November 18 here’s a poem about distance and ever increasing silences

Made of sticks and stones

How did we end up with so much distance
Between you and I? Between what we were
And what we’ve become. Gaping silences
Now divide us, where once laughter united.

There was a time I’d have driven for miles
To bask in the glory of a half-smile.
Now I just wonder, how did we end up
With so much distance between you and I?

Will you smile for me?
One more time,
Will you smile?
Will you make the earth shake?
With a laugh that quakes
The ground beneath my feet.

Will you offer up a moment,
For the moments that we’ve shared?
Do you care? Do you give a damn?
Or are you just leaving
Letting all the doors slam,
Without a backward glance.

How I Wish You Were Here

Wish you happiness,
Wish you content,
I wish you everything you’ve ever wished for.
But I wish, how I wish,

Wish you luck and joy,
Wish you success,
More of everything your heart desires.
So many wishes for more.

Wish you no more tears
To cry. No sorrows;
And I wish, how I wish, to protect you from harm.
I’m wishing you were near…

But instead
I’m wishing you goodbye…

Dark Seas

The girl with the blue sky eyes is looking at me
From across the darkened room. A heat haze
Of emotion flickers like a lighthouse
Beam of day, as we catch each other’s gaze.
We share a smile, exchange a faint glimmer of
Recognition. Two islands that used to be one
Until the dark seas intervened and the current
Forced us to drift further and further apart.

I wish I could have held you there
Half way down the stair
When you turned back and looked my way.
Captured your likeness in the fleeting moment
When the dawn light shone upon your hair
And the dust motes danced a halo about your silhouette.
For you’ve never looked more wonderful
Than on the day you went away.

Home to Roost

I’m transported back to the beginning,
To the moment we first met, before the shame and the regret.
To when we still held our own secrets and had not cried those teardrops yet.
Before the setting of the sun on the longest day

Back when we just matched, before we became detached;
From reality, from each other. We went from lovers
To two strangers, barely speaking, merely passing in the hall.
When the indiscretions stepped out of the shadows. When the truth came to call.
